Easy homemade deodorant

Since I got back on my feet after my treatments, I have been concerned about having another cancer. I know, you need to stay positive and all but the fear is always omnipresent. One of my main worry is breast cancer. When I went to the Genetic department at CHUM hospital, my result came back uncertain. They found a mutation in a gene, but they do not know if it can be hurtful yet. The specialist says that it is common for former ovarian cancer patients to eventually develop breast cancer. Since they respond to the same genes BRCA1 & BRCA 2. In my case, they said there is only 15% chance it can be malicious. Am I worried? Yes and No. Yes, because I am afraid the second one won’t be an easy ride at all. My body is still recuperating from the first one. I feel like my life is way too short to do what I want to do. Most importantly, I do not want to die. And no, because I know even tough it’s going to be hard I’ll fight it again. I will not leave this place because of that disease. Head up! Also, 15% is not really high, I want to focus my energy on the beautiful 85% chance.

I sound so dramatic, I know! Honestly most of the time, I don’t think about it too much. It depends on the day and my moods. One thing is for certain, I want to  try to put all the chance on my side for a healthy life!

A year ago, I started to do my own deodorant. I read so many things about aluminum and other chemicals to be harmful for you. I didn’t want to take any chances and it is a good way to start making your own products. I found the recipes on one of my favorite website: wellnessmama.com . And.. it is soooo easy!

If you are afraid of smelling like you haven’t shower in 2 days, I hear ya! I also had my doubts. At first, I always had a regular non-aluminum commercial stick at work. You know, just in case. Eventually, I notice that I didn’t need to use it. During my really intense workouts in an unconditioned gym during the summer, no smell. Coaching my amazing people at that same gym, no smell. Everything was under control. Alleluia! Well, it happened a couple of times at the beginning. Some days, I just forgot to put some or I didn’t applied it properly. Newbie!

Here are 2 versions:

Deodorant Recipe 1 – Ingredients

  • 6 Tbsp Coconut oil
  • 4 Tbsp Baking soda
  • 4 Tbsp Arrowroot or cornstarch (I use arrowroot, since it is natural and corn-free)
  • Essential oils (optional)

Deodorant Recipe 1 – Instructions

  • Mix baking soda and arrowroot together.
  • Pour in the melted coconut oil and mix well.
  • Add oils if desired.
  • Store in small glass jar.

That was the first one I did. I used it every day and it lasted for EVER. Ever =6-8 months. Pretty good, right?! Not only, it is good for you, it is not expensive at all. Me like!

Deodorant Recipe 2 – Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp Coconut oil
  • 3 Tbsp Baking Soda
  • 2 Tbsp Shea butter
  • 2 Tbsp Arrowroot
  • Essential oils (optional)

 Deodorant Recipe 2 – Instructions

  1. Melt shea butter and coconut oil.
  2. Remove from heat and add baking soda and arrowroot (If you don’t have arrowroot, use more baking soda)
  3. Mix well
  4. Add essential oils and pour into a small glass container for storage.

I highly recommend to put it in a small container. It is easy to use and it will melt during the summer. If you put it in a old deodorant stick, there will be oil everywhere.. When I tried it was really unsuccessful.

I tried both versions. The first one gave me rash at first. My armpits were not happy. It took few weeks to understand that I needed to apply gently not rub it like they owe me money! So far, I like the version 2 better. The shea butter and the coconut oil is a nice and creamy combination. It is easy to apply, it smells good, no rash and it doesn’t stain my clothes.

Try it out and let me know how you like it!
